From launch, Qtum Mainnet required online staking using a Qtum Core wallet full node. These staking wallets sync the entire Qtum blockchain and must run online 24/7 to operate and secure the network and qualify to be block publishers. QTUM holders that did not want to run a full node, or had security concerns, could not participate in staking.
